OPC ENGAGES BANDITS IN GUN BATTLE

Members of the Oodua Peoples Congress in Ekiti State on Friday engaged some bandits suspected to be nomadic herdsmen in a gun duel along the Ijan-Iluomoba Road.
Correspondent gathered that the gang who operated at night had successfully robbed some victims and inflicted injuries on them before the OPC members were alerted by some drivers.
Some residents of Ijan told correspondent that the robbers started their operations around 10pm and it lasted for about two hours.
One of the residents, who pleaded not to be mentioned, said that a leader of OPC was contacted on the telephone about the presence of the robbers.
He stated that the OPC leader mobilised his boys and went to the scene of the crime. He said that the bandits, on noticing that some people were after them, opened fire on the OPC boys.
The source said that the bandits eventually fled when they discovered that they could be overpowered by the OPC boys. He added that although the OPC boys, who pursued the robbers could not arrest any of them, they succeeded in killing four cows in their flock.
He stated that the matter was reported to the police in Ijan and Iluomoba.
But, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh, told correspondent on the telephone that the command was yet to be briefed about the matter.
